Poison in Our Food
I decided to write this blog as a result of a recent food recall issued by Aldi stores in Australia for their Lemon Ginger Herbal Tea.
I am getting sick and tired of these ever more increasing food recalls from big supermarkets and large companies, who know they can get away with murder – literally – as long as they inform the media within a reasonable amount of time about a product they sell, which may be harmful to our health – what if you don’t watch the news that night? what if you don’t find out and continue to consume a product, which can have a long-term detrimental effect on your health or the health of your loved ones???!!!
This brings me back to the Aldi Tea recall, it was found to be contaminated with higher than accepted levels of ETHYLENE OXIDE. This is a man-made chemical which causes cancer (such as Leukemia), it’s primary used in the production of antifreeze and sterilisation of equipment, but it’s also used to fumigate spices and teas.
The fumigation process releases poisonous chemicals/fumes to kill of microorganisms, this is done to prevent cross-border transfer of exotic organisms.
I think what happened, in this case, was that they just might have used too much of the chemical – to the point where there was a high likelihood of someone getting visibly sick, meaning that they had no choice but to issue a recall.
This makes me beyond furious – why is a cancer-causing, man-made chemical in my herbal tea??!!! WTF!!!
Think of the mothers who might have served this to their toddlers, thinking it is healthy and safe and good for the health of their baby, only to find out days later that a recall has been issued on that very tea – this is unacceptable!
I’m sure there’s a better and safer way to deal with this, I’m sure that some microorganisms are safe for cross-border transfer. I’m sure there’s a way we can produce food, which isn’t laced with cancer-causing chemicals. I’m sure these companies can be a lot more transparent with their practices – because – I WANT TO HAVE A SAY IN WHAT I CONSUME AND PUT IN MY OWN BODY!!!!!!
We have become so accustomed to these recalls knowing that there’s nothing we can do about them, knowing that the companies responsible for these recalls will continue to trade unpunished. We feel desensitised and helpless.
I don’t know about you, but I want to know if a chemical is being used in my food. I’d rather have a trace of a microorganism in my tea than having it laced with a cancer-causing chemical – but that’s just me.

Lymphoma and leukemia are the cancers most frequently reported to be associated with occupational exposure to ethylene oxide. Stomach and breast cancers may also be associated with ethylene oxide exposure.
